A Glass Cube of Wellness

WHAT MAKES THIS SAUNA SPECIAL

“Heat + Style” is an apt description of the sauna cabin that SHS Schmierer integrated into the exclusive indoor pool area of a villa in Stuttgart. Like the swimming hall itself, the sauna does not rely on ostentatious opulence but instead impresses with understated elegance and an unmistakable sense of luxury created through carefully selected materials.

Measuring 2.5 × 2.4 × 2.2 metres, the sauna cabin has been seamlessly incorporated into a freestanding architectural cube. An LED light strip at the ceiling line provides indirect illumination, visually lifting the structure and enhancing its light appearance. Two full-height glass façades offer unobstructed views across the swimming hall from every seat and reclining platform, all of which, together with the backrests, are crafted from thermo-aspen.

The door is positioned in the corner of the toughened-glass façade and fitted with custom-designed handles—birch on the interior and finished in a matte gold look on the exterior. This detail maintains a harmonious relationship with both the fittings throughout the swimming hall and the sauna’s bright birchwood interior.

At first glance, the sauna heater appears absent, as an invisible under-bench solution was selected. Nevertheless, the cabin still offers a traditional sauna infusion function, made possible by a filling funnel concealed behind a flap integrated into the backrest. The generously sized reclining benches—1.4 metres wide on the lower level and 1.0 metre wide on the upper level—also allow users to enjoy a bio-sauna setting. The steam generator required for this function is likewise hidden beneath the bench.

A key role is played by the intermediate bench cladding, which conceals the technical components while contributing to the calm, uncluttered appearance of the interior.

DESIGN DETAIL

Viewed from above, the two seating and reclining benches appear to float, elegantly cantilevering beyond the intermediate bench cladding. Their tapered front edges narrow towards the floor, creating a sense of visual lightness and enhancing the refined, sculptural character of the sauna interior.
