WHAT MAKES THIS SAUNA SPECIAL
Nestled within the vast forests of Canada’s Eastern Townships, this residence sits high above the steep eastern shoreline of Lake Memphremagog, overlooking a quiet and secluded bay. The elongated building runs parallel to the waterfront, making full use of its elevated position to capture sweeping views of the surrounding landscape.
A particularly prominent place was reserved for the sauna, which is housed within a black, slightly cantilevered volume projecting from the upper floor and deliberately oriented towards the lake. A large panoramic window frames the view of the water, making the surrounding nature an integral part of the sauna experience.
The interior was precisely tailored to the narrow floor plan and intentionally designed with a minimalist aesthetic. A single timber species defines the walls, ceiling and furnishings, yet boards of varying shades have been combined to create visual interest. Rather than producing a uniform appearance, the careful arrangement results in a lively pattern with subtle contrasts, reminiscent of layered nougat.
The frameless glass door, fitted with discreet hardware, blends seamlessly into the restrained overall design. Positioned in one corner, the sauna heater is fully enclosed by timber elements, allowing it to integrate quietly and harmoniously into the architecture of the space.
DESIGN DETAIL
Located almost at the centre of the spacious residence, the sauna occupies a cantilevered section of the building that extends towards the lake. With its light timber interior, it stands out as a warm and inviting feature within the overall lighting concept, creating a striking contrast to the darker architectural elements and drawing attention to this dedicated space of relaxation.
