WHAT MAKES THIS SAUNA SPECIAL
In Castelrotto, South Tyrol, a former barn was transformed into an extraordinary residence that combines Alpine building traditions with a consciously contemporary spatial concept and a touch of eccentricity. A particularly striking feature of this conversion is the sauna, positioned at the highest point of the house beneath the roof. Rather than blending into the existing architecture, it forms an independent cube within the open-plan living environment.
Despite its prominent placement, the sauna does not feel enclosed or isolated, as its rear wall is entirely glazed. This allows the exposed timber trusses of the building to become part of the sauna experience, while at the same time opening a direct view through the south-facing glass façade towards the Santner, one of the iconic peaks of the Dolomites. Two opposing sauna benches are oriented to capture this spectacular panorama while framing the screened sauna heater between them.

The atmosphere inside the sauna is intentionally kept dark, allowing the carefully designed lighting scheme to take centre stage. Light emerges from beneath the seating surfaces and other concealed sources, creating an intimate, almost theatrical ambience. In strong contrast, the exterior shell of the sauna is clad in hammered copper panels, giving the cube a sculptural presence and transforming it into a striking architectural element within the home.
DESIGN DETAIL
Particular attention was paid to the lighting concept. It begins with the abundance of natural daylight that floods the house through its extensive glazing, continues with the bright illumination of the functional areas, and culminates in the carefully orchestrated lighting effects within the sauna. There, targeted light accents create atmosphere and depth, enhancing the overall wellness experience and contributing to the sauna’s intimate and distinctive character.
