A Sauna at the Heart of the Home

WHAT MAKES THIS SAUNA SPECIAL

Located within the cubic extension of a comprehensively renovated residence in Bad Salzuflen, this designer sauna was deliberately conceived not as a secluded retreat but as an integral part of the main living area. The open-plan space extends across the entire garden-facing side of the ground floor, unfolding through a series of interconnected zones. Directly in front of the sauna is the living room, furnished with a comfortable lounge area designed to encourage conversation and social interaction.

As a result, it was clear that the sauna, which also follows a cubic floor plan, would need to become a meticulously crafted design feature, refined down to the smallest detail. In addition to a light and transparent appearance—achieved through glazing on three sides with a centrally positioned door—the homeowners sought a highly individual interior design. Nordö Saunabau Manufaktur realised this vision through a symmetrical layout featuring two independent reclining platforms.

Crafted from thermally modified aspen, the benches are cantilevered and appear to float directly behind the glass façade. The same timber is used throughout the entire sauna: the wall panelling is made from solid wood boards measuring 18 millimetres in thickness, while even the headrests and door handle are fashioned from thermo-aspen.

A transverse bench facilitates entry into the sauna and can also serve as a footrest or an additional lower-level seat. Behind it, the “Zeus S” sauna heater in Rust Marble by EOS is positioned centrally at the rear of the cabin. The sauna is controlled via a black “EOS EmoStyle” control unit, which complements the clean and refined design language of the space.

DESIGN DETAIL

The two cantilevered reclining benches are undoubtedly the defining design feature of this sauna, appearing to float effortlessly within the space. Their ends have been meticulously crafted with great attention to detail, while the ergonomically shaped reclining surfaces provide a high level of comfort. Together, they combine sculptural elegance with functionality, creating a striking focal point within the minimalist interior.
