The powerful current of a turbine-powered swim system delights an entire family
The pool of Renate and Peter Kruse is a small oasis in the middle of the city. When it was time to renovate their pool, the couple took the opportunity to upgrade it with a turbine-powered swim current system from BINDER. Since then, the wide and powerful current has been providing an exceptional swimming experience for the passionate swimmers every single day.
Having a pool in the garden offers great convenience. There is no need to travel to a public swimming pool for a few laps. Just a few steps across the lawn are enough. A private pool also allows spontaneous swimming whenever the mood strikes. Renate Kruse particularly appreciates this flexibility: “Swimming a few laps in our pool feels like taking a short vacation.”
A renovation that transformed the pool
As the Kruse family’s pool had been built many years ago, it was ready for a complete renovation in 2023. Peter Kruse searched online for a nearby pool specialist and found Poolkind, based in Bargteheide. “We simply stopped by and received very friendly and professional advice,” he recalls.
The proposal from Managing Director Marcel Burdenski impressed the couple immediately. It included not only an Elegant 100 fiberglass pool from Compass Pools, but also a HydroStar turbine-powered swim current system from BINDER. The Kruses wanted to use their pool for endurance training, and a powerful swim current was essential. “With a pool of this size, we would otherwise have had to turn around constantly while swimming,” explains Renate Kruse. The new in-ground pool measures 10 metres in length, 4 metres in width and 1.5 metres in depth.
Powerful swim current technology from BINDER
Before the renovation, the family had a slightly smaller concrete pool with a fiberglass coating. Marcel Burdenski therefore recommended replacing it completely with a new Compass Pools ceramic pool.
“These ceramic pools are among the most durable pool shells available,” says the pool expert. Since he also knew that the family wanted a high-performance swim current system, he added a HydroStar turbine-powered unit from BINDER to his proposal.
Unlike conventional counter-current systems, HydroStar generates its current using turbines instead of pumps. This patented technology creates a wide and powerful flow that supports the swimmer’s body and is extremely difficult to swim through. As a result, swimmers can fully concentrate on their workout instead of constantly correcting their balance, which is often necessary with pump-driven systems.
A wide range of performance levels
Poolkind installed a HydroStar BGA 160, delivering a flow rate of 160 cubic metres per hour. HydroStar systems are also available in several larger versions with flow rates of up to 550 cubic metres per hour. For highly ambitious swimmers, BINDER also offers two special models with capacities of 600 and even 1,200 cubic metres per hour.
The turbine technology was developed by company founder Siegfried Binder and patented in 2014. BINDER originally entered the swimming pool industry with its powerful drive systems for automatic pool covers before introducing its innovative turbine-powered swim current technology.
Unique turbine technology
The market launch of HydroStar introduced an entirely new approach to swim current systems. Nothing comparable had existed before. Pool professionals quickly recognised the potential of the technology, and demand from pool owners increased rapidly. As demand continued to grow, BINDER expanded its production facilities. In 2022, construction began on a new company headquarters with significantly larger manufacturing capacities.
To this day, HydroStar remains unique. Although similar products have entered the market, none of them match the performance of the original turbine-powered system from BINDER.
Suitable for existing pools as well
To make the technology available for existing pools, BINDER developed EasyStar in addition to the permanently installed HydroStar. EasyStar is mounted directly on the pool edge and securely fastened in place. Installation takes only a short time, allowing pool owners to enjoy the swim current almost immediately.
HydroStar itself is also quick to install. Thanks to its compact design, the system does not require extensive pipework or a separate dry equipment chamber, unlike conventional pump-driven systems.
A current inspired by nature
The secret behind HydroStar’s success is its broad and powerful flow, which closely resembles the natural current of a river. This makes the system popular not only among competitive swimmers and triathletes, but also with recreational swimmers, wellness enthusiasts and people who enjoy aqua fitness.
Children also love the natural swimming experience, as playing in the current is great fun.
The Kruse family shares this enthusiasm. “We really appreciate HydroStar,” says Peter Kruse. “Whenever the weather allows, we use it every day from Easter until October.”
To ensure comfortable water temperatures throughout the season, the pool is heated with an air-to-water heat pump.
Comfortable operation
The family controls the HydroStar system using a Piezo push button installed in the pool wall. BINDER also offers several additional control options. The performance level can be adjusted via remote control or with the BINDER24 app.
Since this year, customers can also choose the Illuminated Optical Control Panel (BOB). Different colours indicate the current performance level from a distance, similar to the display of a speedometer. This innovative feature is unique on the market.
Additional comfort features
Besides the HydroStar swim current system, the Kruse family’s pool includes several additional features, such as LED lighting and massage jets. An automatic pool cover keeps leaves and dirt out of the water.
The pool is surrounded by high-quality porcelain tiles that connect seamlessly to a wooden deck. At one end of the pool, the deck opens onto a small terrace, creating the perfect place to relax after swimming or aqua jogging while enjoying the view of the garden.
The right decision in every respect
The Kruse family is more than satisfied with both their new pool and the HydroStar system. They appreciate not only the powerful and natural swim current, but also the system’s excellent energy efficiency. HydroStar consumes up to 80 percent less electricity than comparable pump-driven systems.
“We have been extremely fortunate with the entire project,” says Peter Kruse. “The Poolkind team was highly professional and very friendly, and the turbine-powered swim current system delivers exactly the performance we were hoping for.”
DESIGN DETAIL
The overflow channel is elegantly concealed beneath a natural stone cover, creating clean lines and an uninterrupted pool edge. Matching massage niches blend seamlessly into the design and are operated via discreet underwater touch sensors.
