UNI opens the debate on physical activity

On 23 October, an online workshop will present the new Working Group 21, which focuses on exercise techniques, equipment and services for fitness in indoor and outdoor settings

Swimming pools, gyms, sports centres, outdoor fitness areas in parks: more and more people choose to exercise in organised spaces, and demand for reliable services is growing with them.

Users must be able to trust the facilities they visit, the machines they use and the people who guide them. For this reason, UNI, the Italian national standards body, has decided to open a dialogue with the whole supply chain.

An event for the whole sector

On Friday 23 October, starting at 10:00, UNI will hold a workshop open to everyone working in physical activity. It invites facility managers, equipment manufacturers and exercise professionals, as well as associations, institutions, researchers and standardisation experts.

The aim is to explore how technical standards can help the sector grow and raise its quality. In this way, the experiences on offer can be safe, accessible and suited to different needs.

The new Working Group 21

The event centres on the presentation of Working Group 21, titled “Exercise techniques and equipment for physical activity in indoor and outdoor environments”. The group was set up within the technical committee UNI/CT 020, “Sports and recreational facilities and equipment”.

Its task will be to develop standards for organised physical activity. These will cover services and facilities, equipment and exercise methods, and the skills professionals need.

The scope also includes management and organisational requirements, staff supervision and sector terminology. Special attention will go to the spaces and tools used for training, both indoors and outdoors, and to the quality and safety of what users are offered.

Four goals for the day

The organisers have set four goals:

  1. Present the scope and purpose of the new working group;
  2. Identify the sector’s needs and priorities for standardisation;
  3. Encourage a discussion on shared terminology and professional skills, for both organised and non-organised physical activity;
  4. Invite stakeholders to take part in standardisation work at national, European and international level.

Why take part

The workshop is a chance to see first-hand what technical standardisation does in this field. Participants can share real experience and needs, and help identify where standards can support safer, more qualified services that better meet users’ expectations.

The event will take place online, and registration is required. Participants can sign up using the form on the UNI website.
