Tailored to the Roofline

WHAT MAKES THIS SAUNA SPECIAL

In the attic of a single-family residence in Germany’s Rhine-Neckar region, a bespoke sauna was created and precisely tailored to the challenging architectural conditions of the space. The design and construction were carried out by Sauna-Bau K. Jockers, who realised the cabin exactly according to the homeowners’ wishes—combining contemporary sauna design with classic elements.

Externally, the sauna was seamlessly integrated into the room through a drywall-clad exterior. Inside, high-quality oak wall panels define the design and give the cabin a calm, contemporary character. The complex floor plan required the sauna to be carefully adapted to the sloping rooflines on both sides, while the front façade was custom-shaped to fit the geometry of the space with precision.

At the homeowners’ request, an existing historic ridge post was incorporated into the sauna structure. Today, it serves as a distinctive architectural feature and design statement. Extensive glazing opens the sauna towards the room, creating a sense of transparency and openness both when entering the wellness area and while enjoying the sauna itself.

The seating and reclining platforms are designed as floating elements with a distinctive sculptural language and are highlighted by integrated lighting. The sauna forms part of a cohesive wellness area that also includes an adjacent shower and relaxation zone, demonstrating how custom-built sauna design can transform complex attic spaces into highly functional and visually compelling wellness environments.

DESIGN DETAIL

The seating and reclining benches have been precisely integrated into the sauna on two levels, featuring opposing extensions that create a dynamic and balanced composition. A contemporary design accent is added by the slender, faceted timber slats, whose sculptural character is further emphasised by the integrated LED lighting.
