WHAT MAKES THIS SAUNA SPECIAL
In a modern single-family home near Zurich, Küng Wellness created a 42-square-metre private wellness retreat designed as a holistic sanctuary featuring a sauna, steam room and whirlpool bath. The spatial concept combines a minimalist design language with residential elements such as room dividers, a daybed and a tea kitchen.
The design process was based on a carefully developed mood board that defined the colour palette and materials, resulting in a composition of light and grey-toned surfaces accented by thermally modified aspen wood. This timber characterises both the bio sauna and the slatted room dividers, which play with light and transparency while structuring individual relaxation zones throughout the space.
Measuring 247 × 237 centimetres, the bio sauna accommodates up to four people and features sprung reclining benches for enhanced comfort. A unifying design element throughout the wellness area is the polished natural stone Black Fusion. It runs through the entire installation and even forms a striking architectural feature in the shape of a backlit mountain range.
A compact steam room complements the wellness offering. Despite the limited floor area, all technical equipment is neatly concealed within a cabinet that accommodates the necessary components without compromising the clean design aesthetic.
A key aspect of the overall concept is the use of coloured lighting, which allows different moods and atmospheres to be created. The lighting can be controlled either via the system displays or through the home’s central building management system, providing maximum flexibility and comfort.
DESIGN DETAIL
The polished Black Fusion natural stone not only frames the sauna’s frameless glass enclosure, but also serves as a recurring design element throughout the entire wellness area. Behind the whirlpool bath, it takes on the form of a striking mountain silhouette, creating a sculptural focal point within the space.
