Seamless Craftsmanship in Red Cedar

WHAT MAKES THIS SAUNA SPECIAL

Set on an expansive lakeside property in Muskoka, Ontario, this generously proportioned residence was designed for a multi-generational family seeking relaxation and retreat in the heart of nature. The architecture is composed of three interconnected volumes that accommodate both intimate private spaces and open-plan living areas, depending on their function. Arranged parallel to the shoreline, the main building opens generously towards the lake, taking full advantage of its exceptional setting and spectacular views.

The sauna was also given a prominent position on the lower level, establishing a direct connection to the surrounding landscape. Throughout the project, a strong emphasis was placed on the use of locally sourced natural materials. The exterior is clad in naturally weathering cedar, while the gabled roofs are covered with Red Cedar shingles of varying widths, selected for their durability and ability to withstand the region’s harsh climate.

Apart from the floor-to-ceiling glass façade, the sauna interior is defined entirely by the same cedar material. The carefully selected Red Cedar, notable for its warm colouring, fine grain and minimal knotting, has been crafted with seamless precision, lending the space a calm and contemporary character. The timber gently envelops the room’s niche-defined geometry, within which the seating and reclining benches are integrated in a minimalist manner, appearing to emerge naturally from the walls themselves.

Subtle differentiation is achieved through horizontally arranged slats incorporated into the backrests, creating visual depth while maintaining a consistent material palette. Warm indirect lighting further enhances the tranquil atmosphere, giving the sauna a refined and understated elegance.

DESIGN DETAIL

A minimalist aesthetic was achieved in this sauna not only through the seamless cladding of Red Cedar boards, but also through the integrated seating and reclining benches, which appear to emerge organically from the surrounding walls.
