A Cubic Sauna with a Distinct Identity

WHAT MAKES THIS SAUNA SPECIAL

This designer sauna is located within a high-end private residence in Northern Hesse and was created by Arend Saunabau. The design is centred on maximum transparency, achieved through frameless glazing on two sides, allowing unobstructed views of the strikingly crafted interior.

The sauna walls are clad in vertical alder wood slats set against a black backing, while the clean-lined sauna benches have likewise been crafted from alder wood. The warm tones of the timber interior create a distinctive contrast with the black design elements, including the front cladding that frames the glass surfaces. Black ceiling panels continue this bold colour scheme, enhancing the contemporary aesthetic.

Integrated sparkling light points within the ceiling create the impression of a star-filled night sky. Complementing both the form and colour concept is the cubic sauna heater, which features a designer fragrance bowl made of heat-resistant quartz glass. More than a decorative element, the bowl is filled with Himalayan salt crystals that help enrich the air with beneficial salt ions.

The heater is further highlighted by a trio of black tube-style pendant lights, creating a striking focal point within the space. Hinges, door handle and glass framing are also finished in black, completing the sauna’s carefully coordinated and consistently refined design.

DESIGN DETAIL

The heater in this contemporary sauna has been crowned with a distinctive feature: instead of gemstones, it is topped with Himalayan salt crystals. During sauna operation, these release salt ions into the surrounding air, which are believed to support and strengthen the immune system.
