David Lloyd Leisure eyes Aspria acquisition to boost European and Italian presence

Hertfordshire-based David Lloyd Leisure is in discussions regarding a potential deal for high-end European wellness club operator Aspria, which runs ten facilities in various cities including Milan.

According to what reported by The Times at the end of January 2026, talks are underway: this aligns with David Lloyd’s strategy for further presence in Europe, building upon its established expansion ambitions.
“Enlarging our European portfolio both across those areas where we are already established and into new markets is now a primary focus for us, supported by strategic UK acquisitions and new builds. While we have ambitious plans for growth, we are well on track to achieve our target of 150 clubs by 2026” – these were the words by DLL chief executive in 2017. An objective that the company could further approach with this move.

Aspria runs as a premium health and wellness club operator with a positioning focused on lifestyle with strong attention to wellness and complementary services across its European network. Besides its sports-related offer, Aspria Harbour Club Milan, for instance, features exclusive events and parties for members, an elegant restaurant, a terrace, a bar. The facility also caters to business needs with workstations, coworking spaces, and private meeting rooms.

Strategic consolidation in the premium segment

The fitness sector is currently experiencing a significant phase of consolidation within the premium segment. The potential integration between David Lloyd and Aspria would confirm this trend with interesting implications for Italy. While the national market remains characterized by greater fragmentation compared to other major European markets, the ability to achieve critical mass – whether through direct ownership or network partnerships – appears essential for operators seeking to sustain investments.

The transaction, if completed, would expand David Lloyd’s footprint in Italy, adding Aspria’s Milan location to its existing club in the city.

David Lloyd’s track record in Italy

David Lloyd Leisure first entered the Italian market in 2017 when it exchanged contracts to buy the Malaspina Club in Milan, investing €6 million to refurbish and develop the space, which was originally built in 1972. The deal became the company’s 111th site globally and marked the British operator’s strategic entry into the country.

In 2023, the company continued its Italian expansion by acquiring one of Modena’s most recognized centers, Zeta Due located in Stradello San Marone, with an investment of €9.4 million. It is also going to open a new club in Arese, in the area of the former Alfa Romeo facility.

With these developments, David Lloyd Leisure currently has three locations nationwide. The potential Aspria acquisition would bring the total to four operational sites, consolidating its presence in the Milanese area and significantly strengthening the company’s overall market position.
