A Sauna in Dialogue with the Landscape

WHAT MAKES THIS SAUNA SPECIAL

Integrated into the open architectural concept of a contemporary villa in Austria, this private wellness area was conceived as a retreat that embraces its connection to the surrounding landscape. Access is provided through a floor-to-ceiling, flush-integrated door that is clad in dark-stained timber on one side and seamlessly merges with the adjacent wall surfaces on the other, rendering the entrance to the sauna area almost invisible within the overall interior design.

Inside, a walk-in shower with a rainfall showerhead and a bio sauna form a carefully coordinated wellness ensemble. The sauna cabin opens towards nature through a floor-to-ceiling glass façade, framing expansive views of the landscape and allowing changing light conditions and seasonal scenery to become an integral part of the spatial experience.

The material palette combines grey terrazzo tiles in the entrance and shower areas with dark acacia and aspen wood featuring a calm, understated grain. This combination reinforces the connection to nature while creating a clear and minimalist aesthetic. The sauna benches appear to float within the space, their clean-lined geometry emphasising the calm order and restrained elegance of the interior.

A particularly distinctive detail is the integrated washbasin, also crafted from grey terrazzo. It is incorporated into a cantilevered extension of the sauna bench, which simultaneously serves as a practical surface for sauna and bathing accessories. This continuous design element visually and functionally links the different wellness zones, creating a cohesive and harmonious overall concept.

DESIGN DETAIL

Designed as a cubic wellness retreat, the sauna integrates effortlessly into the villa’s modern architectural language. During the day, its generous glass façade mirrors the surrounding landscape, preserving privacy while visually dissolving into its setting. From the inside, the same transparency invites nature into the sauna experience, creating a seamless connection between interior comfort and the beauty of the outdoors.
