Timber, Stone and Tranquillity

WHAT MAKES THIS SAUNA SPECIAL

This exclusive sauna with direct lake views is located in a timber house in Ožkiniai, Lithuania – and, in fact, within its own dedicated timber building. The property comprises several structures distributed loosely across the site and connected by gently winding pathways. Alongside the main residence, the grandparents’ house and various ancillary buildings, the sauna occupies the position closest to the water, making it a particularly secluded and tranquil retreat.

A vestibule and adjoining bathroom enhance functionality and comfort while reinforcing the building’s independent character. The view of the lake serves as the central design feature and is framed by an almost floor-to-ceiling window, complemented by an additional gable window made possible by the open roof structure. Together, these openings flood the interior with natural light and establish a constant visual connection to the surrounding landscape.

The sauna is almost entirely clad in timber. Its horizontally laid boards continue seamlessly from the interior to the exterior, where they extend to form a covered terrace area. The benches and backrests are crafted from the same wood and in matching dimensions, creating a calm and harmonious atmosphere throughout the space.

A deliberate contrast is introduced by a corner clad in light-grey natural stone, which forms the backdrop for the cubic timber sauna heater with its light-coloured tiled finish. The heater is fired from outside the sauna and simultaneously warms an adjacent stone lounge bench, allowing heat to radiate gently and evenly throughout the room.

Thanks to its carefully selected natural materials, the sauna blends effortlessly into its idyllic surroundings and has become a place of profound relaxation and retreat.

DESIGN DETAIL

The sauna benefits from a generous sense of vertical space, as its open roof structure extends uninterrupted to the ridge, mirroring the architectural concept of the timber house. From an elevated viewpoint, the two timber loungers are revealed on staggered levels, while opposite, a sculptural stone lounge bench seems to grow seamlessly from the sauna heater, reinforcing the harmonious interplay of wood, stone and space.
