The Power of Asymmetry

WHAT MAKES THIS SAUNA SPECIAL

For a private residence in Pullach, Georg Kammerlochner WellnessDesign created a bespoke sauna that is not only highly contemporary but distinctly futuristic in character, complemented by state-of-the-art technology. The project was guided by the owners’ wish for a sauna that would harmonise with the modern architecture and interior design of their home while also adhering to Feng Shui principles.

As a result, the sauna features a chamfered corner formed largely by the glass entrance door, ensuring that no sharp edge projects directly into the room. In contrast, the bronze-tinted glass panels make a bold architectural statement. Tapering towards the floor, they define the sauna’s distinctive appearance and are framed externally by elegant walnut panels.

Inside, softly rounded Hemlock timber provides a restrained backdrop for a carefully orchestrated design concept. The visual focal point is the striking rear wall, clad with horizontally arranged Hemlock slats that continue seamlessly across the ceiling, where they also integrate discreet spotlighting. The corners of the rear wall are finished in dark natural stone, creating a dramatic contrast to the light-coloured timber.

The L-shaped aspen benches are deliberately left without front cladding, giving them a floating appearance and enhancing the sense of visual depth within the room. A centrally positioned infrared heater provides deep, penetrating warmth, while a Lang sauna heater with steam generator and permanent water connection creates the sauna climate.

A sophisticated control system allows users to manage not only temperature and humidity, but also lighting, coloured mood effects and background music. In addition, the sauna has been integrated into the home’s KNX building automation system, enabling seamless control as part of the overall smart-home environment.

DESIGN DETAIL

The extravagant glass front of this exclusive sauna reads as a single, unified design element. Set within the chamfered corner of the frameless, tinted glazing, the sauna door spans the full height of the structure, reinforcing the purity of the design and the impression of uninterrupted transparency.
