Timeless Villa Architecture Framed by Water

WHAT MAKES THIS POOL SPECIAL

As part of the restoration of a magnificent villa in Erfurt and its park-like estate, pool specialist Woelk from Buttstädt integrated a stunning garden pool into the sloping terrain. Positioned at the foot of a grand portal staircase, the pool creates a striking contrast to the villa’s playful classical elements through its clean lines and contemporary design language.

A generously sized staircase extending across the entire width of the pool leads into the spacious swimming area with minimalist aesthetics, almost as a continuation of the elegantly curved entrance staircase. Thanks to the hillside location, an overflow edge could be installed on the opposite side of the pool, creating a beautiful infinity effect while swimming and opening views toward the landscaped park grounds. The overflowing water is collected far below in an adjacent catch basin and directed to the water treatment system.

The concrete pool is lined with a dark natural stone-look membrane that contrasts elegantly with the light-colored terrace surroundings while harmonizing with the tones of the garden furniture. In contrast, real natural stone was used to clad the pool’s side wall, which is bordered by a beautifully terraced staircase descending through the garden, as well as the half-height enclosure surrounding the catch basin. Natural stone also finishes the retaining wall along the slope, above which the pool’s lounge and sunbathing area are located, together with a spacious covered outdoor kitchen and dining area.

DESIGN DETAIL

The infinity effect is created by the overflow edge at the front of the pool. Like a calm waterfall, the pool water flows gently over the wall — which is also clad in the same dark, textured pool membrane — into the catch basin below.
